We designed this campus for an independent school serving Pre-K through 9th grade, on 77 acres of former farm fields. The simple wood framed buildings are conceived as sails with their single pitch roofs creating sunny and welcoming courtyards. The building plan of classroom wings are arranged to form positive outdoor spaces that will be used as an extension of adjacent interior functions. The entry court facing south is sheltered from winter winds and celebrates arrival into a small lobby that overlooks another small courtyard is shared by the library, and provides views of playing fields and rolling hills beyond. The largest court is activated by a playground for Pre-K through 3rd grades and outdoor eating terrace. Drawing from the child-oriented philosophy of the school, each classroom takes its identity from either its unique configuration or from its relationship to the common spaces.
The hydronic heating system features radiant heat floors. The site work included on site well water and waste treatment, as well as an adventure playground in the woods.
