The historic Edward Durell Stone campus at SUNY Albany included ‘impluviums’ in the podium design - intentional roof openings in the canopy that characterize the campus. Lower level spaces around lightwells directly beneath the impluvium openings were the focus of or design efforts - we explored variations of design solutions to cover the lightwells with iconic shapes.
We were retained by the State University Construction Fund under a regional term agreement to rehabilitate the exterior envelope at designated light wells in the podium. Phase 1 provided for work at four locations. Phase 2 added four locations. Two of these were enclosed with a new structure to expand interior space. The design of the structures was studied extensively to sensitively integrate with the Edward Durell Stone campus architecture and provide day-lighting to the new space.
Both phases were completed ahead of schedule and Phase 1 was below estimated cost, while Phase 2 was successfully completed within it.
