The Center for Discovery Children's Specialty Hospital Rock Hill, NY
The Center for Discovery's Children's Specialty Hospital is a transformative adaptive reuse project that includes an addition to a former office building to house the Medically Fragile unit of the Skilled Nursing Facility. The nature of the places within and around the buildings were designed to provide a comprehensive flow of operations, while celebrating an energized aesthetic and memorable spaces.
Within this project a building that housed an insurance agency was transformed into a facility for caregivers, families, patients, students and researchers. An invigorating palette of interesting colors and textures runs through the healthcare clinic, patient rooms, and support spaces, as well as the adjacent school and training center.
Along with intentional programmatic shaping of space, careful attention has been paid to durability, maintenance and the use of adaptive equipment throughout the facility. Deep existing floorplates limit the use of existing windows for wayfinding and spatial legibility. To facilitate memory, landmarking and wayfinding, the project includes numerous custom features including benches, nooks and tree-like elements that provide acoustical absorption, and adjustable lighting, while anchoring and bordering important moments throughout the floorplan.
